Hurtta and Canada Pooch size their coats by back length, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and chest girth; Ruffwear by girth alone. Canada Pooch says the chest girth matters even more than the back length.
How to measure
- Back length: from the base of the neck, where it meets the shoulders, to the base of the tail (Hurtta, Canada Pooch).
- Chest: around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs.
- Neck: around the base of the neck, for Hurtta’s chart.

Canada Pooch’s size 16 is a 16 in back with a chest up to 26 in. Hurtta’s 40 / 16 is a 14.6–16.5 in back with a 17.7–23.6 in chest. Measure both before you choose.
