A Syrian hamster needs a 12 in (30.5 cm) wheel and a dwarf hamster an 8 in (20.3 cm) one, both solid and upright (Woodgreen). Pick your pet for its size.

Why the size matters
PDSA says many hamster wheels are too small, which forces a hamster to run with its back curved and can cause long-term pain, so it goes as large and wide as possible. RVC wants a wheel large enough to prevent injuries.
A solid running surface
PDSA, RVC and the MSD manual all want a solid surface to run on, not slats, bars or wire that a hamster’s legs, feet or toes could get caught in. RSPCA’s gerbil wheel is axle-free for the same reason.
Our sources give no wheel size for rabbits, ferrets or sugar gliders.
Common questions
Is a 6.5 inch wheel big enough for a Syrian hamster?
Not by Woodgreen's size, which is 12 inches for Syrian and Chinese hamsters. PDSA says to go as large and wide as possible.
Can a hamster use a wheel with bars?
PDSA says no: the running surface should be solid, not slats or bars a hamster's legs could get caught in.
